  1. When packing up your closet, keep clothes on their hangers for much faster packing and unpacking. When you choose 1st Choice Movers, we provide the free use of wardrobe boxes! Each 4’x3’ box comes with a metal rod so you can simply take your clothing directly out of your closet on their hangers and hang them up in the boxes. We can provide as many boxes as you need!
  2. Vacuum seal any out-of-season clothing or any clothing you don’t plan on wearing anytime soon. Not only will they take up less space, they will be a breeze to unpack and go directly into storage at the new home.
  3. Try color-coding. Pick a color code for each room in the new home and label that room’s boxes accordingly with brightly colored tape. Then, label the door of each room with the corresponding sticker/tape so everyone, including your residential moving company, will know exactly where to place the boxes. With 1st Choice Movers, we can even provide these color coding systems and labels for you!
  4. Try numbering your boxes. Make a list of what’s in each box by number. This can help you make sure you aren’t forgetting anything.
  5. Hire professional movers especially if you have a lot of fragile valuables. Also, remember to book your residential moving company weeks in advance. Moving on the last day of the month? This is an especially busy residential moving time; so be sure you book well in advance.
  6. Fill in nail holes in your previous home with a bar of soap.
  7. Change your address at least two weeks prior to your move. And, don’t forget the small stuff like magazine subscriptions!
  8. If you have some items that you want to get rid of, schedule for a charity organization to come pick up your items at least one week before your residential moving company arrives. Or, if you prefer to sell, start selling online at least six weeks before moving.
  9. Make your last and final grocery trip two weeks prior to moving in order to cut down on what you need to throw away when it comes to moving time. And, don’t forget to defrost your refrigerator at least one day before moving and wipe up any liquid.
  10. For same-city moves, hiring a sitter for children and pets can help alleviate some of the stress.

Moving Day Countdown:

8 Weeks Left

If you’re lucky enough to know your moving day eight weeks in advance, take advantage of this extra time. First things first; start researching moving companies. Get estimates and make sure the moving service you choose is trusted in the area as well as licensed, bonded and insured.

Next, begin donating or selling belongings you don’t want or need to take with you to your next location. With spring coming up, a yard sale could be a great way to get rid of a few things!

6 Weeks Left

Get organized! Start gathering important documents like your family’s financial, medical and school records. Measure your furniture and start thinking of a plan for where you want your items to go in your new home.

Still haven’t hired your moving service? Get on it!

3 Weeks Left

Pack, pack, pack! Remember to label boxes with the room they will need to end up in at their new destination. Start with non-essential items and things you won’t miss in the weeks leading up to the move. Some examples are:
• Extra, unseasonal clothing
• Wall art and photos
• Decorations
• Non-essential kitchen supplies
• Etc

Make any small repairs needed to the house and change your address through the USPS.
Start cancelling or transferring utilities like gas, electricity, water and the Internet; otherwise, you can end up paying some pricey fees.

Commercial Moving: 5 Tips for Relocating Your Business

The task of moving your business can seem overwhelming from the start. Every business owner knows that they need to complete the move as fast and efficiently as possible so that they can get back to full operation. After all, the less downtime your business experiences during relocation, the less profit you are missing out on. At 1st Choice Movers, we specialize in commercial moving in Ramsey County and the entire state of Minnesota, and we know a number of tricks that can help make the transition as fast and stress-free as possible.

1. Evaluate the Situation

Prior to calling a professional moving company, conduct an analysis of your properties; old and new. Although a commercial moving company will be able to help you with this, your own analysis can give you an idea of what needs to be moved, in what order and where it needs to end up at the new location. Certain items that aren’t used very frequently can be moved sooner than others as they won’t disrupt current operation. Necessary equipment will have to stay in place until the day of the move.

2. Make a To-Do List

While a commercial moving company takes care of much of the move, a moving to-do list for every stage of the process can help you ensure no tasks are overlooked or items forgotten.

3. Keep Everyone Informed

Make sure your employees know the moving plans four to six months prior to moving day. Keep both employees and customers informed of what’s going on, and ensure there are as few disruptions to your business as possible.

4. Hire the Professionals

Commercial moving companies like ours are specially trained in taking care of a move quickly and efficiently without accidental damage to your property. For example, our commercial moving company will lay down protective floor coverings and rail guards to ensure there is no accidental damage to floors, walls or stairways. Hiring a commercial moving company also means you will have more time to focus on the core of your business and that your employees are comfortable with the moving process.

5. Ensure Safety

Hiring a commercial moving company is a matter of safety. With the professionals, you and your employees won’t have to worry about possible injuries that can come with trying to move a business on your own. We take care of all the heavy lifting and all of the other commercial moving grunt work for you.

These are just a few things you should consider before your business’ next big move.
Give us a call today and we can tell you even more about our commercial moving services in Ramsey County and all we can offer. Call 1st Choice Movers today at 763-559-5934, or you can contact us to set up your Free Estimate.

When Possible, Start Early
During the winter, daylight hours become far shorter. Try to take advantage of as many daylight hours as possible. Even when you have a team of moving professionals helping you, it’s still a good idea to have your moving completed before it starts getting dark. This way, you can stay safer and keep warmer as the temperatures begin to dip when the sun goes down.

Keep an Eye on the Weather
In the days and weeks leading up to your big move, keep an eye on the weather. Being aware of any upcoming nasty weather can help you avoid moving during a winter storm. We will try our best to keep your move on schedule but sometimes in particularly bad weather, it could be too dangerous to continue a move as planned.

Prepare Your Home
Our team of professionals can put down protective covering in your home to avoid dirtying your floors. However, if you choose a different route, be sure to consider investing in floor covering to keep ice, salt and dirt from being tracked into your home.

The idea of moving during the cold of winter can be a pretty miserable one, but if you follow these great tips, you’ll be cozy in your new home in no time. 10 Moving Tips from Professional Movers

It seems you can never get enough moving tips. Here are some simple things to remember the next time you move to make things easier. If you need movers in St Paul, you can give us a call to make transporting your items from your old place to your new a swift and easy process.

    Moving Tips

  1. Pack an overnight bag containing all the essentials. Most likely you’ll be too tired to unpack your things, so you’ll want your essentials within easy access, including a change of clothes and toiletries.
  2. Pack the items you will need first in a clear plastic bin. This can include items like a box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, select cookware, toilet paper, tools, power strips, phone chargers, etc. the clear bin allows you to see inside and also separates it from the myriad of cardboard boxes.
  3. Wrap breakables (dishes, glasses, etc.) in clothing or towels to save on bubble wrap. You’re packing two things at once – clothing and kitchenware. Clean socks are great to add extra padding around glasses and stemware.
  4. Pack plates vertically, like records. They are less likely to break when packed this way.
  5. Label boxes and mark by room. You want to unpack by room once you get to your new place. This will make the unpacking process much more manageable. So label each box by the room it needs to go to. Also, remember to label the sides of the boxes, rather than the tops. That way, you can identify them even when they are stacked.
  6. Try to show up at the new home before the move to pre-clean. The main areas you will want to clean will be the bathroom and kitchen. You can put up a shower curtain and stock some bath towels and toilet paper to be ready for moving day.
  7. Buy a roll of stretch wrap. This will allow you to group items together and protect furniture from getting scuffed and scratched.
  8. Keep sandwich bags handy. These are great for holding small parts of things you have to take apart, like curtain rods or mounted flat-screen TVs.
  9. Take a photo of electronics. If you take a photo of how your electronics are connected, you’ll be able to remember how and where all the wires go when you hook them back up.
  10. Cut down on boxes by making all your baskets, laundry bins, hampers and suitcases work for you. They need to be moved too, so pack them with stuff! Use wheeled suitcases for heavy items like books.

We hope these tips will make your move easier. Keep checking our blog for more moving tips. If you need movers in St Paul, give us a call at 763-559-5934 or contact us to get a Free Estimate.
