5 Reasons to Buy a Home and Move in the Fall

Fall is in full swing! In fact some days it feels more like winter! The temperatures have dropped and we’ve already had some snow. This time of year is typically when people are ready to hunker down in their house and wait for spring to arrive. Believe it or not, this can actually be a great time to buy a house! As a moving company serving Washington County and surrounding areas, we want to provide some reasons why this time of year may be an optimal time to buy and move into a new home.

Home sellers tend to get on the market for the first time in spring. They often list their homes too high out of the gate, which could mean a series of price reductions throughout the spring and summer months. These sellers have fewer chances to capture buyers after Labor Day. By October or November, sellers are often desperate and may be offering their house under market value.

Less Competition
Most families want to be in a new home before school starts, so this time of year, many of them have stopped shopping. This means less competition for current houses on the market, and more opportunities for buyers. You’ll likely notice fewer buyers at open houses, which can mean a great opportunity to make an offer.

Motivated Sellers
A home is an investment, which has tax consequences. A home seller may want to take advantage of a gain or loss during the current tax year. Therefore, buyers might find homeowners looking to make a deal to close before December 31. Look for listings that offer incentives to close before the end of the year.

Holiday Season
Another reason for motivated sellers and fewer buyers is the holiday season. At this point, sellers are ready to be done with the process. They are ready to enjoy the holidays and not have disruptions that come from their home being listed. Likewise, most people are focused on the holiday season and not taking time to shop for a home. This again spells less competition in the market for buyers.

True Colors
Most homes don’t show as well once the landscaping fades. Although, a home won’t be as appealing to look at, you will be able to see more of its flaws. The best time for a property inspection is during the rain or snow when you can truly see if there are leaks or issues that need to be fixed. It’s better to know the homes flaws before you buy rather than be surprised several months after you close.
